Milgram Experiment Redux

September 3, 2010 by

Jeff Riggenbach’s extraordinary article today recalls the revealing results of the Milgram Experiment in 1961, and describes the political implications. Here is a documentary showing a repeat of the experiment. The results are reproduced time and again.

Who are ‘learning’ the lessons of ‘democracy’ administered by the minions of the unConstitutional coup?

(1) I’m surprised they can still find people who haven’t heard of the Milgram Experiment. Why haven’t more people heard of it?

(2) I continue to be shocked that anybody goes all the way with the experiment. It makes me feel bad about the masses.

(3) I know that, at my current level of philosophical development, I would not continue. But, then again, I’ve already heard of the experiment, and I have to wonder if I became a libertarian anarchist in part because of this experiment. Perhaps it was because I’d heard of this experiment so many years ago that I began questioning authority at some point down the line. Perhaps if I had never heard of this experiment, I would have turned out to be the sort of person who worships obedience to institutions of authority, who would have gone most or even all the way with the shock therapy.

Or, perhaps not. Perhaps my knowledge of the experiment was not one of the factors that led me to where I am today. Perhaps I would have been the kind of person who would have stopped the experiment early even if I’d never heard of it. I really cannot know.

(4) In any event, it seems many people have still not heard of the experiment, which is shocking (no pun intended). I have to think that only good could come from making more people aware of it. Whenever a cop does something wrong, you always have people defending the cop. Take Officer Rivieri, for example, who was only recently(!) removed from the force for his treatment of a kid over three years ago. The kid complied in every way the officer asked, but his wasn’t enough for Rivieri, who proceeded to push the kid to the ground, steal his skateboard, and scream at him. There are actually some people out there who side with the cop, and the police union thinks he should get his job back. I wonder if people would be so quick to side in favour of thugs with badges if they were more familiar with the Milgram Experiment.

Sincerely,
Alex Peak

I only found out about the Milgram Experiment because of an episode of Law And Order: SVU; aside from that, I’ve never seen it referenced on TV.

The obvious question is what type of person wants to get a small amount of money for scientific testing? Won’t this lead to a skewed conclusion as will a phone survey? Who ever get called up for a survey let alone wants to answer one if they do? If the conclusion is that screening only attract losers who would like to inflict pain on others when they get “authoritah” then is this the secret screening of empowering people for legal violence in the real world?
