Mises Wire

Police State, USA

There are early signs that the Washington Post blockbuster Top Secret America could actually make some difference. Both the left and the right built this ghastly apparatus and it is going to take massive public outrage to dismantle it. The series makes a contribution to building that outrage.

I’m gratified to see Charles Murray recommending it: “Twice this year I have had a spooky sense of living in an occupied country. The first was the morning after Obamacare was passed…. The second was this morning, when I read the first installment of the Washington Post’s series on the world of intelligence that has been built since 9/11.”

The whole Post series really does read like a dystopian novel. So far, the building of this vast and centralized police state hasn’t even come up as a political issue.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
