Anderson online at last

May 4, 2010 by

Economics and the Public Welfare, by Benjamin Anderson, is one of those core classics of economics that is absolutely irreplaceable. Nothing is better in its detailed description of monetary policy and its interaction with the real economy between the wars. He documents the 20s boom and the 1929 like no one else. He thinks like a scholar but writes like a journalist, a combination that has made this book so valuable over the years.

Doug French selected portions of this book for readings in preparation for his Academy class that begins on June 1, and was at this point that we noticed that it has not been online. The new online edition actually includes a wonderful introduction by Henry Hazlitt, which only adds to the value of this book. Anderson actually had a big influence on Hazlitt long before Hazlitt had read Mises.

The book is also available in hard copy from the store.

This is fantastic news. This is one of the best books on the Great Depression because it was written contemporaneous with events and the author, Benjamin Anderson, was on the inside witnessing banking and government actions first hand. If you want to cut though the speculation you need to read this book.
