Read ePub just in Firefox

December 26, 2009 by

Thumbs way up for Stanza for iPhone.

Thumbs way down for Stanza Desktop. It’s ugly, lacks the features of the iPhone version, and, worst of all, it’s buggy.

So how do we read Mises.org’s ever-growing library of free ePub ebooks?

Why not “Read ePub just in Firefox”?

Update (1/12/2010): Based on the advice of our ebook expert, we now say this on the Literature page:

We recommend Adobe Reader for PDF files and Adobe Digital Editions for reading ePub (ebook) files.

I just bought a sony ereader which supports epub format, as well as pdf and a variety of other formats. Epub however, does display the best on the reader and seems to be a very nice way to publish books. Best thing about sony ereader is that it’s not constantly connected and our books (like 1984) can’t disappear when the overlords decide their IP has been illegally distributed. :-D

I have a Sharp Zaurus 5500 I use at night to read, but it has a really dinky screen and none of the software developed in the last 5 years.

HTML reformats pages perfectly well. PDF I have to slide side to side constantly just to read lines that are longer than the width of the screen, or not read at all because the text is too small.

Hopefully this ePub format means flexible screen widths, but I’m left wondering just what HTML doesn’t have that these books need.

…unfortunately many epub’s from the Mises online books are crashing in the Firefox add-on….
…it’s still a buggy app.

.epub format works well in Adobe Digital Editions. I think it is free. It only requires that you create an Adobe ID for activation.

If you try opening these books in the Firefox addon you’ll get an error message:

- Mises: The Last Knight of Liberalism (http://mises.org/books/LastKnight.epub)

- Classical Economics: An Austrian Perspective on the History of Economic Thought, Volume II (http://mises.org/books/HistoryOfThought2.epub)

I contacted Michael Volz, the epub addon creator, regarding these crashes and he is working on it. In a few days he’ll have fixed the bug and distribute an update on line.

Has to be thumbs down from me — seriously, just how drunk can you expect to get at an e-pub?

Anything available in mobi or AZT formats? I own a Kindle, which doesn’t support PDF or ePub.

publius, you can use calibre to move all Mises.org ePubs onto the Kindle via USB:

…as the developer did promise, the epub fixed version 1.2.5 (epubreader_1_2_5.xpi) can be downloaded here:
