From the “government must protect me from a social network I joined voluntarily” department:
Facebook’s new privacy settings are the subject of a complaint filed to the FTC. The social-networking site’s latest revamp makes it harder to shield information and photos from the general Facebook public. That hasn’t sat well with 10 privacy groups, who filed the complaint in order to compel the site to make the information private again.
Yes, because when I think “protection of private information that could be abused by others,” I think of an agency that doesn’t adhere to any privacy standards in its own work.

It’s more of this patent nonsense that consumers somehow have “rights” due to them from private companies that are already giving them tons of services. It’s like when people voluntarily sign up for a credit card and have the audacity to whine to their congressman to pass laws banning interest rate hikes and “exploitative” fees.
Besides, despite whatever policies Facebook has in place, personal data placed there IMHO is vulnerable. I use Facebook; I don’t put any information up that I’m not comfortable with the whole world knowing.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the users write their updates on a “Wall”. It’s like writing something down on a wall in a public bathroom.
It’s the same mind-set that demands “free” healthcare, “free” transit, “free” services of all kinds, and then complains when those “free” services aren’t of expected quality.
Zach, yes! I get so tired of the complaints about credit-card companies, as if there weren’t a copy of the terms on the reverse of the application one submits to receive a credit card. People who use credit cards are perfectly aware that they will be hit with fees if they pay late or go over limit, so don’t do either! It’s entirely within their power. They’re just stupid little babies. And then there are those who complain when the credit-card company or a debt collection agency hounds them over a delinquent account. It’s other people’s money they have squandered and are not paying back! In my mind, it’s little different from stealing. Who’s the criminal here?
But all these companies exploit people’s helplessness! They offer such great things that it’s impossible to refuse to sign up! But then you find out it’s not perfection on Earth, that you were deceived, coerced (well, not with a gun, but you know what I mean!!!!). It’s only right that the government protect us from these evil companies who only care about profit, and give us what we want for however little we want to pay. They’re the greedy ones, always wanting more from us. They need to give us more, because we’re the non-greedy ones who need more for the same price, oh yes, give us more, more more.
Sorry, had to get that out of my system. I thank this site for opening my eyes to the everyday socialism that most people want.
