The state of Nevada doesn’t allow barbers to transfer their licenses from other states. Why? “Because we don’t, that’s just why,” the Nevada State Barber’s Health and Sanitation Board secretary and treasurer Eloy Maestas told the Las Vegas Sun.
Maestas contends that it would be dangerous to allow out of state barbers to wield straight razors in Nevada barber shops. No wonder providing a shave with a straight razor is a lost art.

The fact that you have to have a license to cut hair is still amazing to myself.
Are you kidding? I went to school 2 years to do hair and I own a very successful salon now. You need to know and recognize scalp conditions and diseases. There are sanitation laws you have to follow and going to school is the only way to learn them Paul! So going to school to “do hair” is a good idea. Then again I guess you get what you pay for so if you want a back yard buzz cut then you go get one my friend!
Obviously they don’t allow transfer so that they can collect the fees. Gotta think like a bureaucrat… Can’t have anyone dodging their tribute.
The heads of state HHS boards for cosmetology are typically chosen from heads of cosmetology schools.
Said school owners then typically get to decide:
1. If out of state licenses transfer or do you need to get re-educated?
2. Who can open a cosmetology school
3. How many schools are allowed in an area
4. How long someone has to train for a license (and consequently how much $$ a school gets to make on you)

I remember one episode of MTV’s Tru Life or whatever it’s called they had a black girl who would braid hair on the streets for money, but she made it quite clear she had to be very discrete to do so, as she was unlicensed. She made it very clear she couldn’t afford the license.
For a second I thought MTV might follow up on this oppression and foster a libertarian sentiment; however, it just went by the wayside, as usual…
Sometimes it only takes one little story to get me fired up and angry all day. I believe this is it.
(Not that this story is more outrageous than any other, I am just reminded now of all the similar stories like this from around the country…)

haircuts have gotten too expensive where i live. last i checked, which was over a year ago, it was $16 to walk in and get it trimmed up.
so, i bought hair clippers for $56 and i shave my own head. if some health board wants to try and shut down my “operation,” well, let them try! come and cut it!
OMG! WOW! Those people work hard for their money just like you and $16 is a deal! You get what you pay for and Im glad your happy with your buzz cut. I charge $35 a head and I stand on my feet all day long and my back hurts like hell! Time is $ and with people like you out of the way other people are more than happy to pay for my talent and even tip me…you were probably a bad tipper anyway!

Quite simple really, if everybody could become a barber, then we would have homicidal barbers, who really wished to be lumberjacks, and dress in womens’ clothing and hang around in bars.

Why should it take a license to cut hair ? If the barber is incompetent or charges too high, people will just go elsewhere.
Why should the government be deciding who will get to cut hair and who won’t ?
Hey, I cut my own hair myself at home with an electric clipper am I a criminal since I cut hair (mine, and my brother’s) without a license ?
This is really outrageous and infuriating. When will people realize that if we have the 2nd Amendment it’s for a good reason and that we should use it before we lose it.
This whole story makes me want to scalp some bureaucrats.
As a barber in North Carolina I have my share of horror stories about our state board. However, our rule on straight razors is the opposite of Nevada’s law. It’s mandatory that we have to shave faces with a straight edge in order to get our license. We haven’t shaved anyone in years. When AIDS came around in the 80′s no one wanted a shave anymore. Go figure.
I’m not sure if it’s still the case today, but Alabama used to be the last state where you didn’t have to have a barber’s license. Must be all that pull the Mises Institute has with the state government.

OMG! OMG!! Please don’t be shocked… I have been shaving myself for (1,2,3,4…) 25 years!!! Do I owe 100 million dollars in fines + interests? Am I a felon??
