I would suspect that “modern” economists would attribute the decrease in private sector jobs as the result of the failure of the ‘free’ market. To which this failure had to be met by government subsidized jobs. E.g, fascist sector jobs.
We all know these are lies. But it would be the straw man argument I would apply if I were completely evil.
Actually, I take it as a good sign that private-sector job growth has declined. After all, private-sector businesses are motivated by profit (which = evil), but government is motivated by the will of the people and other stuff that is good and happy and shiny and sweet. The fewer profit-driven jobs, the better. Once people finally realize that the quest for profit is inherently evil and sucks the life and soul out of every human being, we can all start working for the good of humanity as a whole!
(I almost got through that without laughing…almost)
Profit is the new usury.
The statists in this society are about to control and shell game us all into the poor house. The real producers can and will only carry so much on their backs before they wise up and leave these morons to their own contrivances.
How do we go from 550,000 new unemployment claims per week to 247,000 jobs lost in a month?

It’s not a market failure as such, but it is a failure caused by current and past state interventions, so it could not be cured simply by stopping current state interventions but it could indeed be helped by Pigovian subsidies working against the distorting effects – naturally, merely helping “fascist sector jobs” isn’t that.
I provide more detail here.
