Sports logo imitation: wicked or flattering?

June 11, 2009 by

The guy who came up with the Major League Baseball logo was asked what he thinks about the obvious fact that other sports have copied it without credit or payment.

UW: So many other sports leagues [baseball, hockey, PGA, NBA) have copied your approach for their logos. What do you think of that?

JD: I think it’s great. Like they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I started something, and I didn’t even realize it!

UW: So you don’t resent it, like they’re stealing your ideas or anything?

JD: Not at all. They’re not stealing it — they’re carrying on the idea. I feel good about it.

I just came across an interesting article related to plagiarism. I don’t know if it has anything to do with IP.

As a comics fan, I was interested in the James Sherman angle, which also illustrates how different people can originate similar ideas. I also still have several of those Legion of Super-Heroes issues that he drew. Good stuff!

I think imitation watches logo is unflattering because a logo signifies an specific entity.
